After having a few early mornings of getting up and out the door for the WHOLE day we were glad we had planned a nice relaxing day for Friday. We still got up well before sunrise and we walked out to the beach to watch the sun peak over Mt. Haleakala, but we were just lazily enjoying the beauty around us from this new perspective.
We drove around to a beach that isn't quite to Lahaina, but over on that PART of the island. It WaS PeRfEcT!!! There were other people around us, but there was a nice, large buffer zone between all of us. Jeremiah and I sat and enjoyed this beach for a few hours. We had lunch and just relaxed with ocean breeze blowing over us as we sat in the sun or the shade.
The GREATEST part of this beach was watching all the whales that just kept coming along RIGHT in front of us... I was so excited that my camera actually caught these pictures!!! I probably could have sat there until sunset if we didn't have other plans for that night.
For obvious reasons I spent MOST of this time in the shade, but Jeremiah is lucky enough to apply sunblock and sit in the sun to receive of its tanning ability (he is still pretty dark and we've been home like 2 weeks)
After enjoying this beach time we packed up and went off to our final trip up Mt. Haleakala. We had already packed up our stuff we thought we'd need for the (potentially) cold weather we would possibly encounter at the top of 10,000 feet.
As we began heading to the Mountain we could see this large cloud system moving in and completely covering Haleakala. We just kept going. There were times when we couldn't see one car length ahead of us as we traversed the switchbacks, but then all of a sudden we came up and out of that storm system and what a glorious site we saw.
It was simply amazing AND FREEZING. It appeared to be breezing and perhaps a little chilly, that is until you opened your door and stepped out in it yourself. We began putting on our different layers of sweats and hats, while others looked on from their cars. We wrapped up in a blanket and walked up the path to where we had already decided to sit (from when we were up there for the sunrise).
We had gotten there a little early thinking we would want to walk around some, but with the wind blowing as strong as it was and with how sharp it could cut right threw your layers of clothes we thought it best to just sit down in our little cut out of the mountain and get cozy until we could enjoy our sunset.
I'll tell you what, SUNRISE/SUNSET... it doesn't matter which one you see they are each independently beautiful in their own respects.
And just like that, the sun set on our 5th day. We were half way done with our dream vacation. On our drive back down the mountain to the condo we stopped at Krispy Kreme for some Hot Chocolate and Jeremiah asked for 2 donuts and they gave us 2 DOZEN... He jokingly said, "Well, that's as good as roses." We had our cocoa and donuts for dinner and cuddled up for a movie or show on TV, but that didn't last long before we both were ready for sleep. Such a great RELAXING day!!!
