Hawaii
I wanted to take the laptop with us. We did.
I wanted a condo with internet access. We did.
I wanted to be able to use the WiFi in the condo... Ya, that didn't happen.
So instead of having all this done and on the blog as the days went by, I am having to try and consolidate pictures from our camera, GoPro and my phone... this is going to take some time/effort.
Jeremiah and I had saved up and planned to go to Maui last year for our 10 year wedding anniversary (married February 19, 2005). We, instead, took the kids (and only half the money) on a trip to San Diego. So this year we planned to go to Maui for our 10 year SEALING anniversary (sealed in the Manti Temple on February 25, 2006). Lucky for us it was, mostly, in between activities for the kids. I didn't even sign them up for their swimming lessons until after I had cleared it with my parents, because they would have to take them while we were gone.
Monday, February 8th (Day 1)
This was an early morning. We caught the 6:25AM flight from Salt Lake City-Portland. When we were looking for flights and saw that one when through Portland we decided that would be a nice layover because we could arrange to meet up with Jeremiah's Mom and/or Dad for a few ours. We landed a little before 8 (Portland time). Due to circumstances we don't know, Jer's Dad was unable to come see him during our time there; however, because of that turn of events Jeremiah contacted his old buddy Scott Gatherum (best man at our wedding, ran cross country with him in High School, continues to be a great friend) and Scott came up from Corvallis just so we could all have breakfast together and catch up- even if it was for just about an hour. THIS meant so much to Jer.
After breakfast- @Shari's... but not the one where the murder went down... Scott drove us back over to the airport and headed back home to work. Thank you for the fun and breakfast and showing Jeremiah that you too value his friendship as much as he values yours. We went back inside and waited for Jer's mom, Anita, and Darin to arrive for a few hours of time together. They parked and came inside. There are stores and restaurants inside before heading back to the terminals so we all walked around looking in the stores before eating lunch at Panda Express. Visiting and catching up was nice. We gave them a new photo of our family.
...We went to a park near our home and used the timer on our camera with a tripod to take these...
After lunch Anita and Darin left. Jeremiah went through security and headed to our gate to take a nap before our flight... it was at THAT time we both realized no one had thought to take a picture of Jer with his mom. Next time, I suppose.
Our flight wasn't until 4:25PM so we were able to get in about an hour of sleeping before they started boarding the plane.
Neither one of us was too awake at that point and I slept off and on for the duration of the flight while Jeremiah simply listened to his music.
We weren't suppose to get in until 8:49, but landed just after 8... thank you tail winds.
We landed, got our bags and headed for the shuttle to get our rental car. Since it was dark we just took the first car they offered us...
We loaded our bags and drove to the condo we were going to live in for the next 10 days in Kihei. We were suppose to check in at one location and stay in a different location, but after trying to find the check in place we decided to just go to the actual condo and call the company so they could give us the key code for the door... they did and we unloaded our bags for the night. We were both so tired that we fell asleep almost as soon as we were in the bed.
Tuesday, February 9th (Day 2)

We still didn't have any groceries, so we googled places to eat and since we were still on UTAH time we didn't have many options. It was like 5AM when we got up and we were hungry. We were able to locate a place called Zippy's, that wasn't far from us (really most things aren't THAT far from each other). We got there and it is basically like Denny's only it serves yummy Hawaiian food options.
After eating Jeremiah wanted to contact the car rental place and see if we could exchange cars. The one we had didn't give Jer clear lines of sight and he felt surrounded by blind spots. They told us to bring it in and get a different one, so we did...
We picked up this Dodge Dart... it had 573 miles on it. By the time we returned it there was just over 1800 miles... WE SAW THE ISLAND
After the car exchange we went to Costco to get some groceries for the duration of our stay. We got too much food for 2 people... clearly my boys eat way more food than I thought the did.
By the time we had unloaded groceries and changed for the beach it wasn't even lunch time. We drove a little south of our condo to Big Beach/Makena Beach. On our way there Jeremiah was talking about how THE THING he ABSOLUTELY wanted to do/have was drink from a coconut... Now, I like coconuts, but I also had other things that were more important on my list. However, just as he was telling me this we drove past a sign for "Cold Coconuts" and there it was... his THING for the trip.
They just wack off one end and stick a straw in the coconut and there's your drink. I did taste a little of it, but I was just like, "eh", but Jeremiah was thrilled that he had gotten his coconut drink.
It wasn't until after he had already gotten his drink that he asked, "How much?"... oops, next time he'll hopefully remember to ask first, but it didn't matter, that was an ABSOLUTE MUST to him so I"m not sure he'd have cared how much it cost him.
He continued to enjoy his drink before we arrived at the beach a few miles later. We walk out to it and found a spot to set our stuff before walking on down the beach and just simply enjoying being in that moment.
There weren't very many people there that day, I'm sure with it being a Tuesday that helped with crowd control.
In our meandering around Jeremiah spotted this spider and while it was quite creepy looking (and still is) I'm glad he dared to get close enough for this cool picture... this made me aware that in our future hiking I needed to be aware of my surroundings because it is a new place, with new creatures and new potential dangers.
After spending the afternoon walking and lounging around the beach we drove back up to our condo (like 8 miles) and cleaned up before sunset/bedtime... we were still on UTAH time and wanted to remain that way for the next few days based on our planned activities.
This was our sunset view every night... that is, IF we were actually at the condo and not out and about exploring this beautiful island.
